Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto - An Eco-Friendly Resort

When you visit Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto, you cannot help but be struck by the natural beauty and scenic vistas that imbue the region. Between the undulating hills of the Sierra de la Giganta Mountains and the awe-inspiring views of Loreto's islands in the distance, the eco resort is a gem for travelers seeking the best of Baja. When owners Owen Perry and Luz Maria Torres set out to construct the “million-star resort,” preserving as much of the indigenous flora and fauna as possible was a top priority. Years later, Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto continues to be one of the best eco-resorts in Mexico, featuring a plethora of environmentally-friendly initiatives that honor the connection between Mother Nature and its guests.

Utilizing the Gifts of Mother Nature

What makes this one of the best eco-resorts in Mexico is how it uses the gifts Mother Nature has provided in a way that is both sustainable and productive. The eco-resort has solar-panel-lined roofs, an initiative that puts Loreto’s sunny days to work in a way that doesn’t contaminate the environment. All the palapas at the resort are made from palm leaves that have been taken from trees on the property. There is also a vegetable and herb garden that provides ingredients for the delicious cuisine available at the resort’s restaurants, and a seawater purification system that drastically reduces the eco-friendly resorts consumption of fresh water. It utilizes salt water from the Sea of Cortez, cleans it, and disperses it throughout the resort to take care of its water needs. The purification system made it possible to construct Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto without the need for a 30-mile-long pipeline to be installed from Loreto.

Protecting the Environment and its Natural Habitats

Preserving the native flora and fauna of the region is and always was a top priority of those involved in the design and development of the Danzante Bay complex, even at the beginning of the eco-friendly resort construction. Many of the plants that needed to be moved in order to make way for buildings and golf course greens were replanted elsewhere as means of reducing the resort’s ecological footprint and maintaining the natural beauty that is so emblematic of Baja. Those that couldn’t be replanted were added to the resort’s compost, which serves to fertilize the grounds.

In addition, Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto has a Greywater Recycling program, which cleans and reuses water that goes down the drain of sinks, showers, washing machines, and tubs to irrigate the gardens and grass surrounding the resort. There is also a program for the recycling of aluminum, glass and plastic, and all of the resort’s informational brochures are printed on recycled paper. At the diverse restaurants on-site, you’ll receive organic biodegradable straws and at the Palmita Market, the bags are made out of fabric. Finally, the eco-friendly resort's location lies within a protected National Marine Park, which limits the kind of boats that enter Danzante Bay. Not only does this serve to keep pollution to a minimum, but it allows the varied marine life to live peacefully.

Electric Energy Initiatives

Keeping their ecological footprint to a minimum is a very strong part of their mission at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto. In order to do this, they’ve installed solar-paneled lights outdoors, LED bulbs in all indoor areas, and a smart air-conditioning system in all rooms that automatically turns off when the door to the terrace is opened, preventing the system from overworking as it tries to cool the infinite space of the outdoors.

Eco-Friendly Golf Course

The ecological initiatives extend beyond the resort to TPC Danzante Bay, the golf course that shares the immaculate property with Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto. To keep the course vibrant and green, they use organic fertilizers instead of hazardous chemicals and treated water.

There is so much to love about Villa del Palmar Loreto, especially all the aspects that make it one of the best eco resorts in Mexico. For your next vacation, opt for the resort that gives back to Mother Nature just as much as it takes.
